Ferrari racer Sebastian Vettel says Red Bull’s Max Verstappen holding up Mercedes rival Lewis Hamilton was “crucial” to him winning the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.
Mercedes chief Toto Wolff believes the team’s defeat by Ferrari is “personality building” and that he needs “to work on” his emotions during the race after being seen thumping his fist on a desk after Sebastian Vettel emerged in front of Lewis Hamilton following his pit stop.
Toto Wolff says Mercedes may have pitted Lewis Hamilton a “few laps too early” but that they were beaten because the Ferrari was “simply the quicker car”.
Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso described his performance in the struggling McLaren at the Australian GP as “probably the best race of my life” up until he retired while 10th.
McLaren have had plenty of problems in pre-season and, despite his showing in Melbourne, Alonso believes “in normal conditions in the normal circuit we should be last”.
